The Ethereum Classic community migrated its primary real-time communication to Discord, establishing a dedicated server as the main hub for developer coordination, community discussion, and ecosystem announcements.
Why Discord
Prior to the migration, ETC community communication was fragmented across multiple platforms including Telegram groups, Reddit, and various chat services. This fragmentation made it difficult for newcomers to find the active community and for developers to coordinate effectively.
Discord offered several advantages:
- Organized channels: Topic-specific channels for development, mining, trading, and general discussion prevent conversations from getting lost in a single stream
- Role-based access: Contributors, developers, and moderators can be identified through roles, building trust and accountability
- Bot integration: Automated moderation, GitHub commit notifications, and price feeds keep the community informed without manual effort
- Voice channels: Real-time voice discussion for developer calls and community meetings
- Persistent history: Unlike some platforms, Discord maintains searchable message history
Server Structure
The ETC Discord was organized to serve both technical and general community needs:
- Announcements: Network upgrades, security advisories, and ecosystem news
- Development: Protocol discussion, client development, smart contract development
- Mining: Hash rate discussion, pool recommendations, hardware setup
- Community: General discussion, newcomer questions, project showcases
- Governance: ECIP discussion and community proposals
Moderation
The server implemented automated anti-spam and anti-phishing measures to protect users from scam links and impersonation attempts — a persistent problem across cryptocurrency communities. Moderation rules were published transparently, and moderation actions were logged for accountability.
Joining
The ETC Discord remains the primary real-time communication channel for the Ethereum Classic community. Developers, miners, and community members can join through the link at ethereumclassic.com/community.
