Ethereum 2014 ICO
In July 2014, the Ethereum Foundation ran a 42-day public presale that raised ~31,529 BTC (roughly $18.5 million) and issued 72,009,991 ETH tokens at a starting rate of 2,000 ETH per BTC. Combined with the 16.67% reserved for the Ethereum Foundation and early contributors, these tokens formed the entire genesis supply that activated when the Ethereum mainnet launched on July 30, 2015. After the Ethereum Foundation's 2016 hard fork, the original unmodified chain carried all ICO token balances forward and continued under the name Ethereum Classic.
ICO Details
The 72,009,991 tokens issued here are the original Ethereum genesis supply. In 2016, the Ethereum Foundation forked the chain and applied the ETH name and ticker to the new chain. The original chain carried this supply unaltered and was recognised by the global community as Ethereum Classic.
ICO Sale Rate — Jul 22 to Sep 2, 2014
~31,529 BTC raised over 42 days. Early bird rate (days 1–14): 2,000 ETH per BTC, then linearly declining to 1,337 ETH per BTC by the final day.

Token Distribution
In July 2014, the Ethereum Foundation ran a 42-day public presale that issued 72,009,991 ETH tokens across two tranches: 83.33% to crowdsale participants and 16.67% reserved for the Foundation and early contributors. These genesis tokens formed the entire initial supply that activated on the Ethereum mainnet on July 30, 2015, and are carried today, unmodified, by Ethereum Classic.
Today's Circulating Supply
Both chains share the same ICO genesis allocation. Post-genesis emissions diverge because they follow different monetary policies. ETH removed its supply cap after The Merge; ETC follows ECIP-1017's declining block reward schedule toward a ~210.7M cap.

2016 DAO Hard Fork
Jul 20, 2016The Ethereum Foundation executes a hard fork to reverse the DAO hack, creating two chains from the same genesis. The forked chain retains the ETH name and ticker. The original unmodified chain continues as Ethereum Classic, carrying all 72,009,991 ICO token balances forward unchanged.
